-hen I was in hongkong I inspected local city and new sitos
to which persons evacuated under compensation scheme had been
removed. The 60 apensation granted by Hongkong Government is
aaple and there is no room for doubt that refusal of remaining
tenants to move is confirmed by Chinese authorities either
here or in Canton for the purpose of assessing Chinese juris-
diction over Kowloon city in accordance with 1898 convention.
2. it was clear that this situation could not be allowed
to continue since it was involving ¿? Hongkong) Government in
loss of prestige as well as administrative difficulties. I
accordingly agreed with the Governor that if colonial ffice
would confira authority to take legal steps for eviction of re-
calcitrant tenants I would on being apprised of this fact 10-

3. in April 23rd 1 received a telogram from officer -
ad-inistering governaunt informing me that Colonial ffice had
#pproved the suggested course of action. npril 26th I wrote
to Vice Minister for Foreign .ffairs referring to ay letter
(or august 2nd, 1946 and inforaang hia that eviction of
occupants of remaining four houses had been authorised.
